Waterfalls
Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls is one of the most unusual and most popular falls in the South by virtue of its location along scenic mountain highway US 64 West, 2.45 miles from town. The falls drop for 120 feet and cars can drive under the veil of water on the old road. This is the only waterfall in North Carolina that you can drive under. During cold spells, the falls create a large mound of ice at its base. If it stays cold long enough, the falls will form one giant column of ice.
Dry Falls
Dry Falls is part of a series of waterfalls on a 8.7-mile stretch of the river that eventually ends with Cullasaja Falls. Dry Falls flows over an overhanging bluff that allows visitors to walk up under the falls and remain relatively dry when the water flow is low, hence its name. Visitors will get wet if the water flow is high. Drive 3.5 miles on US 64West to the parking area on the left.
Bust Your Butt Falls
If brave, one can jump off a boulder into the Cullasaja River. Bust Your Butt Falls is a little over a mile beyond Dry Falls on the right is a large unpaved parking area flanked by sheer granite cliffs. Park here and cross the road to find Bust Your Butt Falls.
Cullasaja Falls
The 250 feet falls are a long cascade over the course of 0.2 miles. Drive 8.75 miles from town on US 64 West to a pull over on the left side of the road. It is strongly advised that you drive beyond the pull-off, turnaround at a safe place, and retrace your route.
Glen Falls
is about a 3/4 mile hike to the falls. The falls are broken up into three sections, the upper with a 70 foot drop, the middle with a 60 foot drop and the lower with a 15 foot footer. The trail will lead you to all three sections. The hike is down hill from the parking lot, so it’s quite a climb to return. There are quite a few switchbacks, so the climb is not too steep. There is plenty of room to relax on the rocks at the base of the falls. Drive 1.7 miles on NC 106 to the sign for the falls. Turn left, then immediately right onto a dirt road.
Drive 1.1 miles to where the road dead-ends at a parking area.
Cashiers Sliding Rock
Cashiers Sliding Rock is a natural water slide, created by the Chattooga River gliding over a 10-foot high rock face with a few large potholes. It’s a popular local spot during the summer because the water is quite cool. You can slide down the rock, cannonball into one of the potholes or just wade in the pool below the rock. From the intersection of NC 107 and US 64 in Cashiers, follow NC 107 south for 1.9 miles to Whiteside Cove Road. Turn right onto Whiteside Cove Road and follow it 2.8 miles to the bridge over the Chattooga. Park and follow a short trail to the river.
Whitewater Falls
Upper Whitewater Fallsi s the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, falling 411 feet! It’s part of the Whitewater River in the Jocassee Gorge area of North Carolina just before you reach South Carolina. For an excellent view of WhitewaterFalls, follow the paved 1/4-mile walkway to the upper overlook. The walkway begins at the end of the parking lot and is accessible to wheelchairs. A lower overlook with an even better view is located at the bottom of 154 wooden steps. The only full views of the falls are from these two overlooks. Take U.S. 64East. At Sapphire, turn left on NC 281 and go south about eight miles to the Whitewater Falls entrance. Nearby is Gorges State Park with more waterfalls, including Rainbow Falls. Whitewater Falls is part of the Nantahala National Forest.
Hiking and Trails
Sunset Rock
Take a bird’s eye view of the town from the top of Sunset Rock! A short 1/2-hour walk, approximately 0.6 miles one way, leads to a natural cliff side amphitheater where slabs of granite provide front row seats. Beautiful sunsets can be seen over Highlands and Brushy Face Mountain to the west and the vista of Horse Cove to the east (Sunrise Rock) is worth the walk at any time of the day. To locate the trail take Main Street, becomes Horse Cove Road, east from the intersection of Highways 28 and 64 in Highlands, 0.5 mile to the Highlands Nature Center. Park here and follow the sign indicating a gravel road to Sunset Rock and Ravenel Park. Although the trail is marked “Hiking Trail Only” it is a private drive so do not park as to block it. The road ends at a monument for Ravenel Park. Sunset Rock is to the right.
Satulah Mountain
The Satulah Mountain Trail is a short hike along an old road bed to a peak of 4543 ft. just south of Highlands. There is a 270° view to the south, east, and west. Views of the Piedmont, the Blue Valley, and Rabun Bald are excellent. The trail is a steady climb of about 400 ft. over a distance of about half a mile one way. From downtown Highlands, take highway 28 south toward Walhalla for 0.2 miles until the road makes a sharp curve to the right.Go straight ahead at the curve onto Satulah Road. Half a mile up the road the road forks, continue straight ahead on the left fork to the end of the road, a distance of about 0.4 miles. The trail to Satulah Mountain is the rocky old road bed to the right. Follow this road bed an additional half a mile to the clearing at the top of the mountain.
Chattooga River Trail
A pleasant walk through the woods and then along the river, ending with a spectacular view of rock formations from Bull Pen Bridge, known as “The Iron Bridge”. The Chattooga Loop Trail is almost a 2-mile loop trail that begins to the left of the Iron Bridge. From Highlands proceed East on MainStreet, becomes Horse Cove Road, for 4.5 miles to intersection with Bull Pen and Whiteside Cove Roads. Turn right onto Bull Pen Road(#1178) and proceed for 3.1 miles to Iron Bridge. The trail head is on left just before bridge. From Cashiers proceed on Hwy 107 south for 7.0 miles and turn right onto Bull Pen Road (#1178 #1180). Proceed for 5.4 miles to the Iron Bridge. The trailhead is on the right on far side of bridge.
Scaly Mountain
A moderate to difficult 1.9 mile one-way hike along the Bartram Trail to the top of Scaly Mountain. The summit offers a beautiful view of the Appalachians and Piedmont. From High drive south on NC lands 106 for 5.7 miles to the Osage Mountain Vista parking area. The trail starts across the road from the overlook. This trail is not suitable for small children.
Yellow Mountain
Yellow Mountain is a long hike with a fair amount of climbing. Allow a full day to complete this trail. The trail traverses three very beautiful mountains: Cole, Shortoff and Yellow. Several nice views can be gained from Shortoff but the destination of this hike is the spectacular panoramic vista seen from the top of Yellow Mountain. The trail is 4.8 miles one way. Hiking time will depend on the hiker’s endurance. To reach the trailhead take Highway 64 east from Highlands 3 miles and turn left onto Buck Creek Road and follow 2.3 miles. The trail will be on the right.
Historical Walking Tour
Enjoy this historical and informative 2.5 mile easy walk around charming Highlands. Learn how Highlands developed into one of Western North Carolina’s greatest getaways. Approximately 60 minutes. Hiking is harder on the environment than one might think. When hiking please leave nothing behind, even degradable waste like apple cores or banana peels. Stay on marked paths, the fragile plants like ferns and small animals like peregrine falcon chicks become endangered with hikers footsteps.
Old Edwards Inn and Spa Details
Perfect conditioning, warm southern hospitality and a memorable mountain golf experience all characterize the private Old Edwards Club located in Highlands Cove. The Tom Jackson sculpted course underwent extensive renovations in the first quarter of 2009 to become an architectural marvel that sits atop the Eastern Continental Divide in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Players of all levels will appreciate the clubhouse, amenities and especially the golf course--with its inspiring views from elevated tees and greens. Jackson designed the course from the natural topography of the mountain plateau, providing a captivating 18-hole design with an intriguing dual personality. The front side lulls you into a serene mountain valley of greenery and meander streams. As you approach the turn, a 250 degree ascent delivers you to the 10th tee giving you the undeniable feeling of being on top of the world. Breathtaking only begins to describe the next three holes as you wrap your self around one of the highest ridges of golf on the east coast. A shear granite cliff along the right-hand side of number 18 awaits your final descent toward the clubhouse. It is difficult to imagine that a drive can stay in the air for as long as it does here. (12 Minutes Drive Time from Inn)
